Robert Tanner, Event 4 Champion

Event 4 on the Seminole Coconut Creek World Series of Poker Circuit schedule was built for a quick run a WSOP Circuit ring. The $365 buy-in Double Stack Turbo drew 256 entries and Robert Tanner had to battle to capture his first major title along with $18,810.

The father of seven was supported by his wife the entire tournament and she was the impetus for Tanner coming to The Pavilion this morning to play in the $65 satellite. He won his seat into Event 4 and worked his way through a tough field and some bad beats.

“I just had to walk away and get over it,” Tanner commented. He had aces and kings twice at the final table with only one of the big hands holding. Tanner was the short stack at the fast-moving final table but he kept coming back until he was heads up with David Gunas for the title.

Gunas has past success and was looking for his second career WSOP Circuit title, his first coming in October at our sister room in Hollywood. He was wearing his tradition cape and began heads-up with a lead over Tanner but it did not last long.

The two had their chips in the middle and Tanner’s small pair was better than Gunas’ smaller pair of deuces to give him the win.

Tanner stayed tough and overcame a talented final table to book the biggest win of his short career.

“I only started playing this year (2017),” he commented. “The greatest joy in life is enjoying life.”

David Gunas

Robert Tanner began the heads-up match with a small deficit but quickly erased it to virtually even it up. Then they put their chips to use in one huge hand.

David Gunas opened his button for 350,000 and Tanner moved all in. Gunas thought for a few minutes before he finally tossed in some calling chips.

“Do you have aces again?” he asked Tanner.

He did not.

Tanner: 4h4c
Gunas: 2h2c

“And you have my suits covered,” Gunas commented after he saw his hand dominated.

Tanner had problems with his pairs holding at the final table but he never had a sweat as the dealer spread the 6c6d3d9sKs board to give him the hand.

They counted down both stacks and Gunas had exactly 20,000 more than Tanner. That went towards his ante on the next hand and he could not find a miracle to exit in second place.

Tanner celebrated with his wife and enjoyed the moment.

Full recap report to come later this evening.

Mark Stephen Edwards

Mark Stephen Edwards was in the middle of the three players remaining after the break but he ran into two big hands to send him out.

The first saw him ship 885,000 of his stack across the table when his AhJh ran into the three-handed AsAc of Robert Tanner. That left him with 440,000 and those went in the middle soon after.

In his final hand, he shipped in from the small blind with Jd8h and David Gunas woke up with QdQs. The board ran Ks3c2hKh2h to send Edwards out and set the heads-up match for the title.

Mark Stephen Edwards was short after doubling up David Gunas, found a small double, and then went up against Robert Tanner in a big hand.

The two had the chips in the middle in a snap with Edwards in big trouble with 6s6h against Tanner’s AsAh for his 700,000 stack.

The Qh4d3h flop seemed to be no big deal before Edwards added a gutshot draw on the 7s turn. It filled on the 5d river for the unlikely double.

Mark Stephen Edwards – 1,550,000 (16 bb)
Robert Tanner – 950,000 (10 bb)

The two live players checked down the AcQs5dTs3c board and Ryan showed Th2h. Gunas showed a similar Tc2c but Tanner was best with Qh5s to send the four-time WSOP Circuit champ out in fourth place.

Robert Tanner – 1,700,000 (17 bb)
Martin Ryan – Eliminated in 4th place ($6,182)

David Gunas open-shoved, Robert Tanner folded from the button, and Mark Stephen Edwards took a look at the stacks. He called all in with a chance to finish off Gunas before Martin Ryan folded.

Edwards: 9s9d
Gunas: Ah4h

Gunas was behind but moved ahead on the AdQs2d flop. The 7c turn and 4s river were blanks and the chip lead switched once again.

David Gunas – 2,900,000 (36 bb)
Mark Stephen Edwards – 295,000 (4 bb)

Chip leader David Gunas opened to 210,000 from the button and Mark Stephen Edwards moved all in from the big blind. Gunas asked for a count, heard 905,000 and called after a minute’s thought.

Edwards: AsJs
Gunas: Qc9c

Edwards was ahead but Gunas flopped a flush draw on the Jc7d2c board. Gunas added an open-ended straight draw on the Th turn for 18 river outs. Edwards dodged the Td river for the big double to take the lead.

Mark Stephen Edwards – 1,900,000 (24 bb)
David Gunas – 1,300,000 (16 bb)

Charles Rizzo

Charles Rizzo open-shoved from the button, as he had been doing for much of the final table, and David Gunas called in the small blind with the bigger stack.

Gunas: Ah8h
Rizzo: Ac6d

“Chop?” Rizzo asked.

The AdAs7c flop made a chop seem more realistic and they were ready to split the pot after the Kc turn. The 8d river got Rizzo out of his seat and his 810,000 stack sent over to Gunas.

David Gunas – 2,200,000 (37 bb)
Charles Rizzo – Eliminated in 5th place ($4,631)
