Recap

It was a super start to Super Bowl Sunday when Roberto Marin (Aventura) and four other players agree to a five-way even chop in the second No Limit event of the Seminole Hard Rock Lucky Hearts Poker Open.

While Marin, David Shephard (Palm Beach Gardens), David Jackson (Chicago, IL), Giovanni Quintero (Hialeah) and Julian Alvarado (Deerfield Beach) each earned $3,340, it’s Marin who walked away with the trophy when all agreed that the chip leader at the end of play would earn the victory.

“This is my Super Bowl trophy,” said Marin, who earned the title when he edged David Shephard by just 30k heads up on the final hand.

The final five split the remaining $16,700 prize pool.

“I had many (good) hands, but no big hands,” said Marin, who works in real estate and won the title in the early morning hours of Super Sunday.

“It feels good, I’ve been running bad lately,” said runner-up Shephard who lost half his stack early, but was able to grind it back to get heads up.

The official placing put Jackson in third place, followed by Quintero (4th) and Stax Poker Lounge good guy Alvarado (5th).

The event had 84 entries that helped make up the $20,000 prize pool.

The field featured several players who cashed in Event 1 including Abbey Daniels (46th), who has $431,000 in career live tournament earnings. Other participants who cashed in Event 1 included Jorge Gomez (31st), Tim Kegel (44th), Brian Phillis (49th), Alfonso Hassa (52nd), Sonny Lee (59th) and Jason Casten (62nd).

Marin is building on his 2013 success which included a $67,000 score in a four way deal at the Hollywood Deepstack Championships (May).
