Chuck Marick of Coconut Creek appears to hold the chip lead midway through Level 11. Marick has turned his 10,000-chip starting stack into better than 80,000. While he still has a long way to go to catch the the 280,500 of Flight A chip leader Alan Slakman, Marik is off to a good start here in Flight B.

Event 1 Day 1B: McAnulty Spikes a Straight

Level 6: 300/600/25 Ante

Patrick McAnulty (Sparta, Wisc.)
Patrick McAnulty (Sparta, Wisc.)

Patrick McAnulty’s prayers were answered as he got the last of his short stack in holding pocket threes. He was facing off against the pocket tens of one opponent and the K-J of another.

The flop fell 5c4c2c improving McAnulty to a straight draw. A queen on the turn was no help to any player. The river fell with a fury when the dealer burned and turned the ad completing McAnulty’s unlikely straight. He busted the player holding pocket tens and doubled through the K-J.

McAnulty, a traveling poker dealer and floor supervisor, now holds about 8,500 chips heading to the first break.

Event 1 Day 1B: Cards are in the Air

Just 11 players remain from 118 starters following the first of six opening flights in Event 1 of the 2016 Coco Poker Showdown. Alan Slakman, who surged into the chip lead following a double elimination late in Flight A, bagged an impressive 280,500 chips. He’s out in front of Bobby Bradley, who won the $350 pot limit Omaha eight-handed tournament at the Lucky Hearts Poker Open last week, and Miguel Martinez.

Full chip counts:

1. Alan Slakman – 280,500
2. Bobby Bradley – 193,500
3. Miguel Martinez – 167,500
4. Allan Dungo – 153,500
5. Josh Dichkewich – 152,000
6. Stuart Greenbaum – 74,500
7. Opal Whitley – 66,000
8. Arlene Vazquez – 42,000
9. Ishaq Kundawala – 28,000
10. Arhur DiPoti – 20,500
11. Joseph Patalano – 2,000

As Day 2 participants, each of the above players are in the money. Additionally, they are drawing live to earn an additional min-cash if they’re able to bag a subsequent starting flight.

And no. That’s not a typo. Joseph Patalano bagged 2,000 chips. He squeaked into the money and assured himself a payday.

Event 1 Day 1A: Bobby Bradley Bursts Bubble

Bobby Bradley
Bobby Bradley (Wellington, Fla.)

Just about a week ago, Bobby Bradley was in the process of winning the $350 pot-limit Omaha eight-handed event a few miles south at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Hollywood. Now, he’s making some noise in Coconut Creek and bursting the bubble in Flight A of the $100,000 guaranteed Event 1.

With 12 players remaining, Bradley picked up pocket nines and had a lone opponent’s A-8 at risk. The board ran out no help and Bradley busted an unknown player 12th sending the final 11 on to Day 2.

Players are now bagging. It appears Alan Slakman will head home with the chip lead as he holds just under 300,000.

Full chip counts will be posted shortly.

Event 1 Day 1A: Alan Slakman Leads with 18 Left

Alan Slakman of Coral Springs, Fla. picked up A-K at just the right time to bust the A-7 of Richard Davis and the Q-10 of another opponent. The players got their chips all in preflop and Slakman raked a mess of a pot that surged his stack to about 175,000.

He now leads the way with 18 players remaining. Play will conclude when the field is down to 11 players.

Event 1 Day 1A: First Flight Draws 118 Entries

Event 1 Day 1A – $130 No Limit Hold’em
Level 10: 800/1,600/200 Ante
Players Remaining: 33/118

The first of six starting flights drew 118 players generating $11,800 of the $100,000 guaranteed prize pool. The clock currently shows 33 remaining toward the end of Level 10. They’ll log a couple more levels of play before the opening flight wraps with 9 percent of the starting flight.

With nearly 90 players entered through the first four levels, Event 1 of the 2016 Coco Poker Showdown is looking like it will yield a sizable field. While the $130 buy in is low enough to entice novices, the $100,000 guarantee generates some interest among more experienced players as well. Joe Patalano and Richard Davis are among the notables entered thus far.

Both are regulars in the South Florida poker scene. Patalano owns 53 career cashes totaling more than $160,000 while Davis has some solid results of his own including a final table in a WSOP Circuit event at the Palm Beach Kennel Club.

Both players are hoping to beef up their resumes over the next 11 days here in Coconut Creek.
